Your dates in the sacred calendar

The entries below come from our Ethiopian and Gregorian calendar, using Ethiopian dates for fixed commemorations and the recorded Tinsaye dates for movable observances. They identify what falls within the travel window, not unrestricted access to a service.

Pae’gume’ · month of cleansing

6 September 2027 · 1 Pae’gume’ ( ጳጉሜ ) 2019

The five days of Pae’gume’ (six in a leap year) invite preparation, holy water and the commemoration of Archangel Rufael. Local arrangements require confirmation..

Biete Gabriel-Rufael · local timing and attendance arrangements require confirmation.

Enkutatash (Ethiopian New Year)

12 September 2027 · 1 Meskerem ( መስከረም ) 2020

the New Year sunrise prayers, blessing of yellow Adey Abeba flowers, and communal hymns across the sanctuaries.

Biete Medhane Alem · local timing and attendance arrangements require confirmation.

Tradition and the seasonal landscape

The highlands can still hold rain and fresh green growth. We keep walks flexible and let the transition into the new year shape the pace.

Our women-led team and our partners guide you through the places that receive us. We explain the meaning of the observances, prepare you for the local expectations and let the community’s worship shape our approach. You may observe respectfully without taking part in a rite outside your own conviction.

Making the dates work

New Year falls on the final travel day in 2027. We propose remaining in Lalibela for the morning, with any flight afterwards subject to the service timing and airline schedule. To experience the full day without rushing, add a night and return on 13 September.

These dates define a proposed joinable journey. The service times, transport, hotels and price must be agreed before it is offered as a confirmed booking. Read the day-by-day plan to see which observances fall while you are in Lalibela and which require an adjusted arrival or return.
