Travel safety for Lalibela and our extensions

Official advisories, practical questions and careful planning for the journey you are considering.

Read this before you plan

Lalibela is in Amhara. Gondar and Lake Tana are also in Amhara; Aksum and Gheralta are in Tigray. The UK, US and Australian advisories currently warn against travel to Amhara and Tigray. A welcoming community or a quiet day does not remove a regional warning.

Lalibela and our extensions

St. Lalibela and nearby sacred trails

Amhara regional advice applies to Lalibela and routes into the Lasta and Bugna landscapes. Review the town, airport transfer and each proposed excursion separately.

Gondar and Lake Tana

These extensions also fall within Amhara. An extension is never assumed suitable because another part of the journey is possible. Roads, boat arrangements and access need their own checks.

Aksum and Gheralta

Both are in Tigray. FCDO advises against all travel to the region and reports suspended civilian flights to and from Tigray. A displayed itinerary is an invitation to discuss future planning, not confirmation that the route is operating.

What we check with you

Before arrangements are agreed, we discuss your complete route, the relevant government advice, current local information, transport access and alternatives. Our team’s local knowledge adds practical context; it does not replace official advice or guarantee safety. Flights, roads and permissions can change at short notice.

Insurance and a decision you can stand behind

Travel insurance is mandatory to book with us. Ask your insurer to confirm in writing that your policy covers the exact destinations, activities and advisory levels, including medical treatment and evacuation. Do not assume a standard policy covers travel against government advice. If the journey cannot be responsibly arranged, we will discuss postponement or a different plan.

Check your own government’s advisory before booking and again before departure. Tell us about mobility, health and support needs early so that any proposed journey can be assessed properly.
